THE BEST BEER IN THE WORLD: BELGIUM

Belgium never ceases to amaze us, not only is it known for its exquisite chocolate, it is also said that Belgium is a beer paradise, but why?

The making of beer and the esteem in which this drink is held are part of the living cultural heritage of a vast series of communities scattered throughout Belgium. The cultural tradition of beer plays an important role in everyday life and festive events. Around 1,500 different types of beer are produced across the country with different fermentation methods.

Plus, did you know that the best beer in the world is produced in a Belgian monastery? To buy it, you must order it two months in advance and pick it up there.

You can only make the purchase in person, by visiting the abbey, and the process is quite rigorous: it all starts with a phone call that must be made at least 90 days before the scheduled date to pick up the order. The telephone line receives up to 85,000 calls per week. The maximum sale is two racks per car license plate and costs only 40 euros, less than two euros per bottle.

Once your call has been received and you have successfully entered the buyers list, you must come to the abbey in person. To get there, you need to get there by car and drive an hour and a half, or transfer between buses. A line of cars will have formed at the entrance to the abbey; each customer passes his name, makes the payment and receives his locker on site. If you don't want to queue up and order two months in advance, the only other way to get the beer is by the glass or two six-packets at Cafe In De Vrede in the same abbey.
